HLA Scholarship Programme Application Workshop

These workshops are designed to guide applicants in creating strong, competitive applications for the Healthcare Leadership Academy Scholarship Programme. Each of the three sessions will focus on different aspects of the application process, ensuring participants are fully prepared to submit.

By the end of the sessions, participants will feel confident in both the written and video components of the application process.

Workshop 1: Understanding the Application Process and Key Requirements

Date: Monday 2nd February 2026

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an overview of the Healthcare Leadership Academy Scholarship Programme and its goals.

  • Understand the key components of the application process.

  • Learn the expectations for the short-answer questions and video submission.

  • Familiarise participants with the format and best practices for presenting their ideas concisely and effectively.

Workshop Content:

  1. Introduction to the Healthcare Leadership Academy Scholarship Programme

    • Purpose and goals of the programme

    • Key values and competencies the Academy looks for in applicants

    • How the scholarship can support career development and leadership growth

  2. Overview of the Application Components

    • Short-answer questions: Format, content, and expectations

      • Importance of being concise and impactful

      • How to approach each question using bullet points for clarity and focus

    • Video submission: Why it’s part of the process and how to make it effective

      • Tips for a 2-3 minute video (clear messaging, professionalism, and confidence)

  3. Q&A and Discussion

    • Address common questions or concerns about the application process

    • Open floor for clarification on any part of the application procedure

Interactive Activities:

  • Review of a sample application form with focus on short-answer questions and the video section.

Workshop 2: Crafting Powerful Short Answer Responses

  • Understand how to structure and write effective short-answer responses.

  • Learn techniques for articulating key skills, experiences, and motivations in bullet points.

  • Practice responding to common application questions in a focused and impactful way.

 

Workshop Content:

  1. Why Short Answer Questions Matter

    • The role of short answers in assessing your fit for the programme

    • How to highlight leadership experience, career aspirations, and personal development

  2. How to Write Impactful Short Answer Responses

    • Breaking down each question to focus on key themes (leadership, impact, motivation)

    • Using bullet points for clarity: How to make each point count

    • Examples of effective vs. ineffective responses

  3. Demonstrating Leadership in Bullet Points

    • How to highlight your leadership experience and achievements concisely

    • Emphasising transferable skills and key competencies

  4. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

    • Avoiding vague language and overly general statements

    • Focusing on evidence-based responses: Show, don’t tell

 

Interactive Activities:

  • Review sample answers and questions with attendees giving constructive feedback on what could have been improved.

Workshop 3: Preparing Your 2-3 Minute Video Submission

Date: Monday, 9th February 2026

  • Understand the purpose of the video submission and how to present oneself confidently.

  • Learn strategies for effective communication in a short video format.

  • Discussing a sample 2-3 minute video to see how you can complement the written application.

 

Workshop Content:

  1. The Role of the Video Submission

    • How the video gives insight into your personality, communication skills, and leadership potential

    • Key points the selection process looks for in the video

  2. Preparing for Your Video

    • Structuring your video: Introduction, main points, and conclusion

    • Tailoring the message

 

Tips for Effective Video Presentation

  • Body language: Confidence, posture, and facial expressions

  • Voice modulation: Speaking clearly and at an appropriate pace

  • Technical considerations: Lighting, sound, and background

How to Rehearse and Refine Your Delivery

  • Recording a draft video to review your performance

  • Techniques for improving tone, pacing, and overall delivery

  • Seeking feedback from peers or mentors before the final recording

 

Interactive Activities:

  • Review a sample video with attendees giving constructive feedback on what could have been improved. 

  • Discussion on how to manage nerves and project confidence on camera.

Meet Your Workshop Host

Eleanor Morris - HLA Senior Management Team

Elle works as an Academic Clinical Fellow (ST3) in General Adult Psychiatry, based in Yorkshire, with a research interest in eating disorders. She is a graduate of Hull York Medical School, with an intercalated BSc from King's College London. Following medical school, Elle undertook an Academic Foundation Programme in Medical Education.


Elle has a PgCert in Medical Education from Sheffield University and a PgCert in Health Research with Leeds University. Beyond this, she is part of the Senior Management Team for Healthcare Leadership Academy and an Academic Tutor with Medics Academy. Elle is also Chair of the Board of Trustees with Reimagine Youth (formerly Students for Kids International Projects).”
