Periklis Giannakis
I recently graduated in Medicine from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. Alongside my medical degree, I completed a BSc in Biomedical Engineering and Clinical Materials, graduating with First Class Honours.
My academic journey has been shaped by a strong interest in ophthalmology, artificial intelligence, and the impact of health inequalities. I have published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences, but what I value most are the opportunities these projects have given me to collaborate with colleagues and share ideas.
As part of my Healthcare Leadership Academy Scholarship, my project focused on developing an AI course for clinicians, which introduced me to the challenges of bringing innovation into healthcare education. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of teamwork, inclusivity, and clear communication when leading change.
Mentorship has been an important part of my journey. I have supported students through programmes such as In2MedSchool and Migrant Leaders. These experiences have shown me the value of guidance, encouragement, and creating safe spaces for people to grow.
I am looking forward to continuing to mentor through the HLA, sharing what I have learned so far while also learning from others. For me, mentorship is a two-way process, and I hope to contribute to a supportive community of future healthcare leaders.
