Ahmed Hefnawy
I am a Specialist Trainee (ST5) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a particular interest in gynaecological oncology and advanced laparoscopic surgery. Alongside my training, I hold an Honorary Research Fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology at Nottingham University Hospitals, where I am involved in projects looking at perioperative pathways, same-day discharge after laparoscopic hysterectomy, and improving outcomes in complex surgical cases.
My career so far has been enriched by completing fellowships in the UK, USA, Italy, South Africa, and Jordan. These experiences have not only broadened my surgical skills but also given me a real appreciation of how different healthcare systems approach women’s health. Presenting my work internationally and publishing in peer-reviewed journals has helped me translate these experiences into research and practice.
I currently serve as the East Midlands trainee representative for the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) RIGS committee. This role allows me to support colleagues, advocate for trainee needs, and contribute to shaping regional training in gynaecological endoscopy.
Teaching and mentoring are areas I feel strongly about. I enjoy supporting junior trainees and medical students, whether that’s in the operating theatre, on the ward, or through career guidance. I see mentorship as a two-way process — while I hope to share my experiences, I know I will continue to learn and grow from the perspectives of others.
Through the HLA mentorship programme, I hope to contribute meaningfully to the development of future leaders in women’s health while continuing my own journey as a clinician, researcher, and mentor.
