Press release: HLA Amsterdam 12/02/2020

The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) works with healthcare students and young healthcare professionals to forge the healthcare leaders of tomorrow. An intense, year-long programme helps HLA scholars to explore and develop their leadership potential. Over the last year, three HLA alumni successfully expanded the programme to The Netherlands and started a cohort in Amsterdam.

During the weekend of 8th & 9th February, The HLA Amsterdam cohort was hosted at Het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (The Dutch Medical Journal). The sessions covered challenging themes such as negotiation, power & influence and diversity. Faculty member Sjoerd Repping gave a challenging and interactive workshop on quality evaluation and effective healthcare. Wouter Kollen shared his insights on personal leadership and his journey in founding the Prinses Maxima pediatric oncology centre.

Geeth Silva shares about his experience as a scholar from the Amsterdam cohort:

“After a challenging time adjusting to the requirements of being a junior doctor, this weekend reignited my enthusiasm for leadership. It’s fully down to the quality of teaching alongside the inspiring character of my peers in this community.”

The intense year-long scholarship programme encompasses project development, personal development and mentorship, as scholars seek to explore and expand their leadership potential. The Amsterdam cohort is unique, and builds an international community bringing together UK and NL scholars in Amsterdam.

Ilse Blomberg, one of the founders of the Amsterdam cohort, said:

“We started the Amsterdam cohort because we believe that a truly international group will provide the most challenging and inspiring experience for our scholars. What struck me during our last weekend is how this diversity has contributed to a strong sense of community between our scholars. It is absolutely inspiring to see the continuous exchange of ideas and how strong friendships are growing simultaneously. During the next round of recruitment,  my fellow cohort directors – Jim and Emma – and I hope to welcome an even more diverse cohort. We encourage you to apply no matter which healthcare profession, seniority level or country you are coming from.”

Scholarship applications for 2020-2021 will open 1st March 2020. We hope to share this opportunity with your network.

Notes to editors:

1) The HLA houses an exciting faculty from across the health sector and beyond. Their shared aim is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and develop their understanding of leadership. Too often in healthcare, leadership is confused with management. Through a combination of mentoring, Socratic discussion, and philosophical exploration, The HLA aims to inspire our scholars to change the world of healthcare, one small step at a time.

2) The HLA hosts an open conference annually. This year’s conference will be held at Amnesty International UK, 25 New Inn Yard, London, EC2A 3EA on 10th December 2020. Details of this can be found here: http://35.228.129.185/conference/

3) The HLA host an open access blog page, which features shared wisdom and learning from leaders across the healthcare sector and beyond. Blog articles can be found here: http://35.228.129.185/the-leadership-blog/
